Jekyll and Hyde Part 2

In the second part of the graphic novel, the pictures continue to go the words, and the words are not really needed since the pictures are so descriptive. I think in the second part there was more writing to go with the pictures than in the first part of the book. The pictures in the second half the pictures are more dramatic and make the book a little more interesting. There are many pictures of Hyde since the second begins to reveal the other side of Jekyll. From the pictures we get a sense of what Hyde looks like and the action that he begins to get himself into, for example the girls that he has romantic affairs with. In the novel it is not clear as to what he does but the pictures clearly show some kind of affair with women.

I like this panel because I think it does a great job of explaining what is going on. It is where Jekyll begins to explain why he started experimenting with potion because of his belief to separate his good and evil side. The pictures do a great job of depicting the beginning part of his story.

Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde Graphic Novel

The graphic novel was a fun piece to read and really gave a visual picture of the novel. There is not many differences between the novel and the graphic novel. The biggest difference is that the graphic novel only includes the most important events and highlights in the book, as opposed to the novel which provides details about places and people and we get a vivid pictures of the reaction of the characters. For example, the author in the book describes the places as empty and dark yet building surrounded everywhere, though in the graphic novel everywhere looks pretty much like plain walls, and the color doesn't really demonstrate the dark and demented feel that is described in the novel.  Also in the graphic novel, In the graphic novel we get a sense of the authors view of each character and how they look. I think the graphic novel is more for entertainment, where a novel is made to capture a readers attention and build up tension and suspense to make it more interesting. The differences are not bad, the graphic novel just highlights the important part in the book, it leads straight to the point of each event. A graphic novel can help enhance the message because it is so straight forward with the message. The pictures also help enhance the novel's message. The graphic novel uses word specific combinations, where the pictures illustrate exactly what is going on in the scenes. For me, I didn't not have to read all the words to understand exactly what the pictures were trying to get across.

This is a image from the book on page 58. I think this picture enhances the novel because it is one of the most important scenes in the book. After this scene the truth begins to unfold and we get to find out the real story behind Jekyll and Hyde. I think that the author purposely made this scene a double spread because of its importance in the graphic novel. The word choices are very clever because they are the most important words in the scene.

Chapters 8-10 Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde

Mr. Poole goes to Utterson very shaken and scared. He tells Utterson that he thinks that there has been some kind of foul play regarding Jekyll and insist that Utterson go back to Dr. Jekyll's house with him.  On their way there, Utterson feels very uneasy. When they do get to the house, they find all Jekyll's servants gathered around with fearful faces. Utterson and Poole go up to the lab, and Poole tells Jekyll that Utterson has come to visit him, but he responds in a voice that is not Jekyll's and tell them that he is not seeing anyone at the moment. They both then go to the kitchen and Poole begins to tell Utterson about  all the strange things that have been happening like the strange voice wanting him to go on constant runs to the pharmacy because he is in need of a drug in which no one in London sells, and the weird footsteps he hears. He also tells Utterson that he once saw the man in the lab come out, in which he said looked nothing like his master. They both come to the conclusion that they should break into the lab and see what is really going on. Utterson tells Jekyll that they will come in by force, and Jekyll begs them not to, and Utterson recognizes the voice to be Hyde's and they immediately break down the door. When they go inside they find Hyde's body laying on the floor with one of Jekyll's suits on, and next to him seems to be some kind of vile, in which looks like he has poisoned himself. They also see a mirror in which they find odd, and then on a desk find a big envelope which is addressed to Utterson. He opens it, and find a will, a note with the present date, in which it says that he can open the other letter from Lanyon to finally hear his confession. In the envelope is also another seal note in which he does not wish to open until he his in private. He takes the three things and goes home and tells Poole that he will be back before midnight in which they will call the police.
The next part of the chapter is the story told in Dr. Lanyon's eyes to Mr. Utterson, he says that after the dinner party he received a strange letter from Jekyll telling him that he wanted him to do something for him. It instructed him to go and remove a drawer from the lab and take it, as to which someone would come and take it at midnight. The letter was very vague but said that if he listened that he would soon find out the truth. Very confused, Lanyon did as the letter said, and when he got to Jekyll's house, he went into the lab, and took out the drawer. In it he found a weird vile of salt, and some kind of other red liquid. It also contained a notebook, in which it had what seemed to be all of the recordings of experiments. At midnight, a small sized evil man appeared which was Mr. Hyde, though Lanyon did not know who he was since he had never seen him before. Mr. Hyde seemed to be very anxious and only wanted to get to the drawer. He took the salt and the red liquid mixed it, and told Lanyon if he wanted to see what would happened. Lanyon curious and confused said that he wanted to see. Mr. Hyde drunk the liquid and soon the little man turned into Dr. Jekyll in front of his eyes. Lanyon end the letter saying that what Jekyll told him after is too horrifying to repeat.
The last part is Jekyll explaining his story to Utterson. He said he started out as a healthy body with a good nature. He would appear as serious and put-together in public while hiding his more evil side behind close doors. By the time he had grown he said he found himself living a double life, in which his good side constantly felt guilty of his evil side's actions and he wanted to make something that would separate his good and evil side, which is when he started researching. He finally found a chemical that could separate the two. He bought the last ingredient to his experiment, which was the salt and then he mixed and drank the potion. He said at first he felt pain nausea, but after that he had transformed into this little man in which he felt stronger, younger, and powerful: Mr. Hyde. Transforming into Hyde had become a pleasure for Jekyll. Jekyll even built a separate home and opened a different bank account for Hyde. Everyime Jekyll would turn from Hyde back to himself, he felt like he did not wrong, though Jekyll would try to fix any wrong doing that Hyde had did. Though after a while he began to realize that he was acting out of hand, when he involuntarily turning into Hyde. He then told himself that he would not drink the potion again, though after a while he gave in, and Hyde was even more wilder in which led to the death of Dr. Carew, in which he was delighted in doing so. After this, Jekyll decided to never turn into Hyde again. Though after some months while at the park, he turned into Hyde involuntarily, which was the time he sent Lanyon to get his potions for him. In the end, Hyde grew stronger and Jekyll weaker, and the needed salt was not working anymore, his last moment he spent writing the letter to Utterson which which he said Henry Jekyll will be dead.

" All things therefore seemed to point to this: that I was slowly losing hold of my original and better self, and becoming slowly incorporated with my second and worse. (55)
This quote is significant since we start to see that Jekyll realizes that his evil side is becoming stronger than his regular self. He likes the things that his evil side is doing, and feels powerful. Though he knows the crimes he is committing is out of hand.

"I have been doomed to such a dreadful shipwreck:that man is not truly one, but truly two."(48) this quote is also interesting, since it is what drove Jekyll to go on with his experiment to separate the good and evil of a man and separate and the good and evil in himself.

Janice Doane and Devon Hodges
NOVEL: A Forum on Fiction , Vol. 23, No. 1 (Autumn, 1989), pp. 63-74

This article basically talks about, in the Victorian age that woman were looked at as powerful and threatening probably because of their use of seduction. the article compares this to Mr. Hyde, in which it says that he poses the same qualities as a woman. It says that Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde is a combination of masculine and feminine qualities and how it can be compared to the author and his wife.

Summaries 5-7 Dr. Jekyll Mr. Hyde

Utterson finds Jekyll in his laboratory looking really ill. He tells Utterson that he no longer has anything to  do with Hyde, and that their relationship is over. He also says that the police will never find the doctors killer. Jekyll begins to tell Utterson about a letter from Hyde, which says that Hyde thanks Jekyll for his generosity and assures him that he is fine. Jekyll is confused on what to do with the letter since he fears that it might put his reputation on the line. Utterson takes the letter for Jekyll. On the way out Utterson runs into Mr. Poole and ask him to describe the messenger that sent the letter. Poole replies that he does not recall seeing any type of messenger come by to drop off letters. Later when Utterson returns home, he confides in his clerk Mr. Guest about the letter, Mr. Guest takes the letter and compares it to a dinner invitation written by Jeykll and finds that it is the same handwriting. A time later, Jekyll's health starts to look up and he begins getting involved in charities and having dinner parties again, in which Lanyon and Utterson attend and the 3 have a good time like the old days. A few days after, Utterson calls and Poole informs him that he is back to his old ways and does not want to see visitors. Utterson decides to visit Lanyon and finds that he his sick, and will die in a couple of weeks. When Utterson mentions Jekyll to Lanyon, he tells Utterson that he does not want to hear anything about him. He gives him a letter, and tells  him to not open it until he has died, and it was explain everything he needs to know about Jekyll and the way he is acting. Utterson writes to Jekyll and Jekyll replies and says he agrees with Lanyon that they should not see each other any more. He also tells Utterson that he will be in seclusion and that he will not be taking any visitors, he is struggling and suffering from something that  he cannot say. After Lanyon death, Utterson opens the letter only to find another letter that says only to open after Jekyll's death so he puts it back in his safe. The next Sunday, Utterson and Enfield take their stroll, and Enfield mentions that the laboratory is connected to Jekyll's house. At the window they see Jekyll getting some fresh air, and Utterson insist that he join them on the stroll. Jekyll refuses and says he cannot do that, and they carry on with conversation. A few seconds later, a scared terror look takes over his face, and Jekyll quickly closes the window and disappears, leaving Utterson and Enfield in silent shock.

1. Why did Lanyon become so ill? Did jekyll try to poison him?
2. Why didn't Utterson just take the letter and turn it into the police? I think that would have saved a death.

"I bind my honor to you that I am done with him in this world. It is all at an end."(25) This quotes I found very significant since it marks the claim that Jekyll is done with Hyde. He says that Hyde does not want his help anymore. The disappearance of Hyde also works positively since in the book, it says that Jekyll had gotten back to his old ways and that he was beginning to become social again.

"I am very low, Utterson. replied the doctor drearily, "very low. It will not last long, thank God." (32.) Here it shows how Jekyll is getting back to his old ways. It seems that he is suffering very bad and sounds like he wants to die.

Cohen, Ed.  "Hyding the Subject? The Antinomies of Masculinity in The Strange Case of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde". Novel: A Forum on Fiction: 37.1-2 (2003 Fall-2004 Spring), pp. 181-199.

This text basically explains the exclusion of the female characters in the book, and how they were portrayed in the novel. It also analyzes the contradictions of the male the character in the book according yo masculinity, class, nationality, throughout the 19th century. It also explains how the authors wife was against the idea of his book and judgmental which probably why the woman were portrayed as weak in the book. This could be a great topic for a paper, since I did touch on this subject a little in my powerpoint, and also it can help explains the difference of how woman were treated then and how much power a woman has today

Dr Jekyll and Mr. Hyde 1-4 Summary

The first chapter starts out with describing Utterson which is a lawyer and as we read on a great friend of Dr. Jekyll. His personality is similar to Jekyll as it says he is a boring, conservative person as well. While on one of their walks, Utterson and Enfield start chatting, and Enfield starts to tell Utterson about a deformed man that trampled over a young woman who was screaming. A crowd begins to gather and they are disturbed by the ugly face. The man decides to give them money so that they would leave him alone and writes a check. Enfield does not believe that the check is real, and he goes the next day with him to cash it and it turns out to be real. Enfield believes he knows who the person is and who signed the check thought he stops and promises not to talk about the situation again.

Utterson returns home and takes out the will of Dr. Jekyll which states that he was to ever die or disappear all his belonging must go to a man named Hyde. Utterson is disturbed by this because he thinks that Hyde has a some kind of hold or power on Jekyll. Later Utterson has a dream that he meets with the ugly man, which says that he is a friend of Jekylls'. Utterson decides to visit Jekyll but when he goes to his house he is not there. Jekyll servants tell him that they have orders to obey Hyde. Jekyll has a dinner party and Utterson stays behind to talk to him privately. Utterson begins to tell Jekyll about his suspicion of Hyde and Jekyll begins to get nervous. Jekyll tells him that he has a great interest in Hyde and can get rid of him when he wants to. A year later, the chapter begins with a maid describing a time when she was sitting by a window and the horrific death of as we get to understand is Dr. Carew, that Hyde is guilty of. The police find a letter in his pocket, which is written to Mr. Utterson. The police and Mr. Utterson goes to Hyde's chambers though he is not home, they go in a find the murder weapon and burn his check book. They wait for him but he does not turn up for weeks and has no family, or friends.

1. Why were the people so judgmental about Hyde's looks?
2. Why did Utterson decide to show the police were Hyde live after he promised Jekyll to protect his will?

Two quotes that interested me was when Jekyll said that, "The moment I choose I can be rid of Mr. Hyde." We later find out that Hyde takes over completely and not able to control him. also the quote, that describes the murder, " Her eye wandered to Mr. Hyde, who he had  heavy cane...All of a sudden, he broke ...in a great flame of anger like a madman." This quotes was interesting since this is were we begin to see that Hyde is getting out of hand.

Application 153

1. Shape: I think the story's sequence is great. All the events are in order. The story starts out with describing the couple as that they have just gotten married, and the couple being anxious about what to expect back home. Then it describes that bar they are in and the suspense builds up to a crazy man who is out to shoot him though he stops because he finds out that he is a newly-wed.

2. Language: The author does a great job of using descriptive detail. I get a clear sense of the behaviors and the anxiety that the couple felt in the beginning. The way that everything is described paints a vivid picture of the people, sounds and places around them.

3. Participants: A drunken man has a issue with Potter as soon as he gets in town. He wants to have a gun fight with him, but Potter is not up for it since he is a newly-wed and has his wife with him. When Potter explains that he is just married, the man begins to  change his mind and decides not to end his life.

4. There is very much a lot of suspense in the beginning of the story where it describes the newlywed couple. The train ride is very suspenseful because Potter is worried about what to expect when he gets back to his hometown. The emotions in this paragraph are very descriptive and describe the anxiety that he was feeling the whole way there. In the bar, it is very detailed as well as it describes the scenery and the people in the bar. At the end when Potter is face to face with the man who wants to kill he they describe the battle and how they are face to face with each other, which reminded me of those old western movies in which the two opponents are across from each other, the tumbleweed blowing across, and the harmonica playing.

Application 143

1. As Jeremy sits in his cell across from him he sees a prisoner polishing bars, the prisoner signs to him that he wants to talk later with him, the guard becomes suspicious and asks him what he is up to. the prisoner replies that he is getting his work done. The prisoner turns around and the last sign he gives Jeremy is a balled fist as a sign of "strength."

2. The man is afraid of getting caught, yet he still supports Jeremy's theories. He is on his side and probably want to help him that why he takes the risk and lets him know he wants to talk. The sign of strength is very important because he is telling Jeremy not to give up.

3. A South African prison is very different from a general prison in which people are allowed to talk to each other. I think that inmates are more fearful of getting in trouble because the consequences are worst.

4. I loved the poem and thought it showed a sense of togetherness and strength as the fist in the end symoblized.  The man wanted to show Jeremy that he was not alone. This reminds me of my classmates and I getting together to make sure that a teacher that we thought was unfair and and doing their job got fired. I went to complain, and my classmates stood behind me because they felt the same way it was empowering to know that they all had my back and felt the same way.

5. I think the title of the poem, "A Person is A Person Because of Other People" goes with the poem since it shows that with strength and how people come together to support a cause. I think it is meant in a positive way in this case, the man showing that he agrees with Jeremy made Jeremy maybe feel empowered and motivated him not to give up and reassured him that he was doing the right thing.

Man's Nature Is Evil

The article "Man's Nature Is Evil" is an article based on the believes of the philosopher Hsün Tzu. He believes that human were born evil. In his book he argues with other philosophers and their beliefs. Tzu believes that since every man was born evil that strict discipline and undergo harsh punishment had to be enforced to make humans good. He said that "Godness is the result of conscious activity." It also goes on to say that "He is born with feelings of envy and hate, and if he indulges these, they will lead him into violence and crime, and all sense of loyalty andy good faith will disappear."(101). I don't understand how they know that a person is born with hate and envy. I disagree with this and I am a little confused by this theory. Tzu also believes that for a man to become good he must undo "training." The quote says, "Man must first be transformed by the instructions of a teacher and guided by ritual principles."(101). I am also confused by this because who gets to decide what is "right" and how you make the distinction. They said that these things would be taught by sages, but who are these sages and how do they become sages? I think and feel as though his philosophy does not make any sense. Maybe that why after the empire fell his teachings were banned

Man's Nature Is Good

The article "Man's Nature is Good" mainly talks about Kung Fu Tzu which is known in the west as confucius and Meng Tzu known as Mecius and their views on the man's nature of being good, and Mecius believing that it is good. He was a famous philosopher and wrote during the Warring States in China. During this time many religions were being discovered and being tested so that China could find out which one could promise political stability. Confucian's answer to this was, "good government requires good leaders, and good leaders must be good people."(94.) Kao Tzu believed that human nature was neither inherently good nor evil and Mencius and his disciples believed that love and respect were from internal feelings from human nature. "there is not such thing as a person who isn't good, just as there's no water that doesn't flow downhill."(95). This quote really stood out to me since I too believe that there is good in every person. Everyone has a heart and compassion for someone and I think that is what makes us human. Another quote that goes along with this same argument is, "Without the heart of Humanity and Duty alive in us, how can be human? When we abandon this noble heart, it's like cutting those forest."(97). This basically goes with my idea that there is good in everyone. I am also the kind of person that wants to see the good in everything because I am a more optimistic person, and believe that a person can change.

Thesis Statement

Deciding to Dorm is a big decision in a teenagers life. For many, it might be the first time that they are on their own and having to adapt can be rough. Not knowing who you are living with, wondering if you will get along, adjusting to a different work space are just some factors that come into mind. Creating an ideal work space in your dorm that fits your needs and accommodates your comfort and personality is very important lighting, privacy, comfort, and creativity, and organization are the most significant factors in creating an ideal workspace.

Campus Space

Campus space is an article about the importance of physical appearance and design on a college campus and how it may affect a student. It shows how the placement of different buildings can communicate whether a school actually "cares" about a student's well-being non-verbally. It talks about how physical features are also the most important factors in first impression. It gives a scenario of a family who goes on a visit to a college campus that their son is thinking of attending. When they do get to the campus and in some case disappointed because of various building that are difficult to find. Overall they did not like the school's first impression. One of the quotes that I found very interesting while reading was, "It is clear that the campus physical environment is an important feature that influences students' attraction to and satisfaction with a particular institution."(12.) I feel like this is very true. I don't think anyone wants to go to a beat down campus that is not well kept and out of order. First impressions while choosing a college was very important for me, if I did not feel a connection with the campus, I did not want to attend it because I would most like hate my experience. Another quote that was also interesting to me was, "It has been shown that the attractiveness of a room influences positive affect and the energy level of those working in the room." I also agree with this quote and find it very true with myself. I tend to work well and be happier when I am surrounded with color and when a room is very clean. For example at CSUN I love going into Bayramian Hall because of the classrooms and the overall feel. I also enjoyed having a class in the building because the classroom I was in was all white, but with lime green chairs. I felt more energized and ready to learn, as opposed to a class in Jerome Richfield where classrooms are a little more smaller, and barely have any color. Even though it might sound weird, I find it very true especially for myself!

Comic vs. New York

As we all know New York is known as the city that never sleeps. There is always something going on in New York not matter what time of the day it is. It is known for many famous spot, such as the statue of liberty, and the empire state building. In class we were asked to find a comic book picture and a real picture and compare the two on how well the comic book picture captured the important aspects of New York.  In the picture above, it shows Spider-Man on top of many skyscrapers, as he makes his way around the town. In the background, the sky is colored in black and there are many skyscrapers that are lit up with yellowish colors that represent the lights and awakening, on-the-go feel that New York gives off. The sky is also dark, because New York is also known for its gloomy feel, since it always rains in the city. Marvel does a great job of capturing the important aspects of New York City. The city is also known for its skyscraper in which we see many in comics and in the  picture above. New York also has this dark feel because it is taken over by these skyscrapers that tower and make up most of the city.

Comic Book Space

The article, "I Am New York" Spider-Man, New York City and the Marvel Universe." by Jason Bainbridge talks about how New York is basically the birth place of comics and was the birthplace of famous comic writer such as Stan Lee and artists like Jack Kirby. It explains how New York has been a place where all the comics have evolved and revolved around, these comics include Spider-Man, Fantastic 4, and X-Men. New York is pretty much where everything has come alive. "Spider-Man, as he is Marvel's flagship character, predominantly based in New York City and arguably the template for Marvel's other superheroes."(164.). This quotes just explains how spiderman has become like a "role model" for other comic characters. I believe this is true since spiderman is one of the most popular and most common, and I think in the movies did a great job of using the New York setting. One of my favorite quotes while reading this article was, "They say New Yorkers have seen everything...But here's something they new saw...a mammoth tidal wave, so high it surmounts the city's tallest building...so terrific it slams down the world's most famous building! Goodbye Broadway!"(165). I love this quote because it has so much humor to it. It just shows how creativity one can have and how technology can make it come alive.

The Empty Parking Lot Space

Today we were asked to think about a public space in which we thought could be renovated or kept as is. Instantly I thought of a space that would be perfect for a recreation center. Around my neighborhood, about literally a couple seconds away from my house, is a huge empty parking at the back of some sort of old government building, which I don't think is open anymore. It is filled with dead weeds, and plants, and the whole space is unevenly paved. There are so many deep dips, and it is actually dangerous. The lot is hardly ever used, except on Sundays for extra parking space when there is church service.  I think that this space should be turned into a mini park in which neighborhood children and their families can come and play and enjoy themselves. If the public space is there why can't it be utilized for something useful such as an entertainment spot for the children. I think it is a perfect way to keep the kids out of trouble, and at the same time it is a good way for them to get physical exercise.

The kids in the neighborhood deserve a place where they could be able to play and have fun.  As a kid, during the summertime when my mother was at work, it would be so boring! My friends and I alway used to talk about how great of a space the empty parking lot would be for some basketball courts, a swing jungle gym, and benches surrounded with nice plants. I think that we are in need of some sort of mini recreational place in the empty parking lot. In my neighborhood, my apartment building is the newest one on the block, and kids from next door love to come in and play in our building. Sometimes it could get a bit annoying, because you constantly hear ball flying towards windows which is a hazards to us residents or loud screams, which makes it difficult to study on the weekends.  I also thing that making this recreational center would make the neighborhood a little bit nicer, and keep the children out of trouble.

There are many places that look run-down and plants around the area are unkept. Making this recreation center would brighten up our neighborhood and I think that I would bring our community closer together, so that we could have a save environment for the children to enjoy and play in. The only fault I think this space has is being next to a main street, but by building high cement walls, I think this problem would be solved. I also think that making the parking lot into a park would attract many visitors outside our neighborhood since it is on a main street. It is also convenient, since there are many food places and a liquor store nearby.

"My Dream Workspace"

If I had to create a workspace in which money was no object, I would definitely dedicate a big room for my space. I love a more modern feel, so the colors in the room would be black and white with a touch of baby pink. I don't like clutter because I tend to get distracted when there is a lot going on in one space, which is another reason why I would go with white walls and follow a modern feel.  I would have one wall dedicated to pictures of friends and family. I would want a big dark wood desk, with a lot of drawers so that I could fit all my things neatly. I also want a really bright desk lamp similar to the one in my dorm room for lighting. I would also put french doors in my room, with pretty linen curtains for natural light, because I feel like I work better with natural light in the room. There would be a remote in which I could control when I wanted the curtains open and when I wanted them close.  I would also put in numerous flood lights with dimmer to adjust the lighting in the room, and the remote could also control this. I would have a corner in which there would be a comfortable sofa, and a mini refrigerator and a table with a coffee maker since I am a big fan of coffee. This area would be my break area, where I would take breaks during my work, and even take a nap if I needed. In another corner I would insert big file cabinets, were I would put all my past work and have them filed neatly, so that if I ever needed anything from the past, I could go into that cabinet and find it. My work chair would be big and comfortable and adjustable. I hate working in chairs that are comfortable because I tend to get frustrated and my back starts to hurt. I love wall art in in the picture below I would do wall art similar to that. I think it is very chic.

The Right to the City

The article, "The end of Public Space?" is mainly about the 1969 riots in San Francisco. They were generally started when a UC chancellor decided that they wanted to turn People's Park, by the University of Berkeley were many homeless resided, into a recreation center for students with volleyball courts and other things. In the end, the University won and now the park is a recreation center for the students at the University. Many were against the idea since they thought that turning the park into a recreation center would make the park loose its true meaning of a free and open park for everyone. In the article it mentioned that the university wanted it to, "to be park in which inappropriate persons-"the criminal element" were removed to make room for students and middle-class residents, who had been excluded because of this matter (120)." I feel that it really absurb that they wanted to kick out the homeless people and deny them another place where they could sleep. It is also upsetting how they mentioned "middle-class residents." I don't understand why you would have to be middle class resident to hang out at a park. Its a public place! A UC spokesperson also mentioned that, "We have no intention to kick out the homeless. They will still be here when the park changes, but without the criminal element that gravitates towards the park (122)." I disagree when they say they want the criminal element to change. Personally I believe that you cannot stop criminal element from gravitating anywhere. I don't think that making a place UC owned would stop "criminals" from coming there. If they want to continue the crime in that area they will. I think that it was just a nicer way and an excuse to scare the homeless people in that area away. Overall I thought that the article was really interesting. It amazes me what the government went through to take away a public place that is meant for everyone, seems like they want to take over everything these days and its even crazier now since they took it to an extreme and tried to take away our freedom on the internet!

My Work Space

My workspace is my dorm. As you can see in the picture, I have a spacious desk were I can fit all my supplies and books. I have a really bright green lamp which is one of my favorite things because it is really bright and gives great light. The one thing I would say I don't like about my workspace is the chair. It is very uncomfortable and after a while, I end up going on my bed to finish my work. I keep post -its next to me because I tend to forget a lot of things. As you can see I have post-its on my wall with reminders of different things. One thing that I would like to change is to add more color. I love color and tend to be more happier and focused when there is more color around me. Also I want more picture frames in my room, and maybe add some photos of friends. my dorm is really boring and there is not much that reminds me of home except my teddy bear. I like my workspace because it is very quiet and organized, I know where everything is and I don't have to worry about anyone touching my things. I feel very focused her and try to get everything done before I go home on the weekends because I know that there are too many distractions at my home in Los Angeles. As you can also see on my desk, I have a green organizer, where I keep my jewelry and small school supplies for easy access. All in all my workspace satisfy's my needs and I am pretty happy with it.

Thesis

Because of various types of techological advances today with gaming systems, and other gadgets, there are many miscommunications between parents and their children causing them to loose the close connections and bonds of family and friends.

The Cold Case of the Killer Car

It is the year 2040, hardly anyone does anything by hand. It is a world were everything is sleek and slender. Everything is so modern and high tech and everything is done with a push of a button or just by speaking and telling a machine your command. No one really has time to visit each other. Everyone is in their own little world busy with their jobs and making sure that everything in their life is running smoothly. This world in this age and time is always on the run no matter what you are doing. Almost everyday there is a new invention in which people are excited to get their hands on if is something that can be of a convenience to them. The most fascinating and most upgraded piece of technology is cars.
The car industry is so big at this time, there are new inventions and new gadgets almost every month. Car shows are very popular and this is the one thing that everyone attends in person and not over a virtual camera. There are now solar paneled cars, and this is one the greatest finds for car, since people save a huge amount of money on gas while doing its justice for the Earth. Your car is more like your friend. You could speak to it and it would take you where ever you go, GPS systems in your car were three dimensional. It was basically a little floating cube that hovered on top of your dashboard, telling you ever step of the way if you wanted to take the time out and drive yourself to your destination. Hardly anyone ever got into accidents anymore since you car would warn you when to stop or if not it would stop itself, if it felt like you were in danger.
One day as Sam was on his way to work, he received a call from his best friend Eric. He was happy to hear from his best friend since they did not speak much, because of their busy lives. They were catching up and Sam was telling him about his latest success that would make him a millionaire. Sam told Eric that the first thing he would buy was a new car. He was so excited and wanted to purchase the new 2041 Ashton Martin, he was waiting for the end of the year so that it would debut. He thought they were so cool, though he did not want to trade in his current car.  It was a 2032 metallic black Mercedes Benz. This car had been his buddy for a long time, and they had struck a close bond. As the car heard this, it started to speed a little faster, as if it was enraged with the news  and Sam began to panic. “Slow down now.” He shouted and Sam decided to turn off the automatic mode and drive himself the rest of the way. His best friend asked him if everything was okay, and Sam told him he would call him later.
As Sam drove the rest of the way he was a little worried and undeceive. He told his car that it was time for a change, it was a new year, and the replied, “but we are buddies, I’ve been at your service almost nine years now.” Sam replied, “ Yes I know, I’m not even sure yet, just take me to my destination.” “As you wish Sam” the car replied. The rest of the way Sam was caught up in his thoughts. Should he trade in his old car buddy for a new and improved one? He would feel sorry for his old buddy. Even though it was only a car, for eight years, that was his buddy. As Sam got to work, he locked his car and told him that he would be back later.
As the day flew by Sam got tired and after a long day of virtual meetings and other conferences he decided to head home. As he got into the car, he felt weird. The car automatically locked and the seat belt flew across him. “I am not going to be traded in. You betrayed me!” The car was furious. Sam began to panic and ordered the car to turn to manual. It disregarded his order, and the car started and speed off. Sam begged and pleaded the car to turn off and asked it where it was taking him. It replied, “If I die, we die together that’s what its going to be!” Sam screamed for help as if anyone could hear him. The car got to a high cliff and drove off. Sam said a quick prayer as the car reached the edge. They tumbled to their death, and no one heard of them ever again.

The Experience Machine

The Experience Machine by Robert Nozick is mainly about a machine in which you could have kind of desired experience of your choice. You would be able to choose from a large library of experience and for two years you would reside in a tank with electrodes attached to your brain. Then after the two years, you would have some time to come out of the tank and pre-plan the next two years of your life to your liking. I found this so crazy and technology is just looking for more ways to zone us out even more from living life. I would personally not want to be plugged-in as the article points out, "plugging into an experience machine limits us to a man-made reality..."(p.90). I totally agree we would just be living by the experiences that we choose for ourselves, we would not be in touch with the world or the people in it. Another quote that I found really interesting was, "To be is to do, as some famous philosopher once said."(90). I think this quote just sums it all up.  he says that the machine doesn't do anything for us, and he is totally right.  Why would you just want to satisfy your needs? At the end of the day there is not point, and after all your needs are satisfied what comes next?

The Veldt

Whats funny is when I started reading the first line of the story I thought nursery? huh. This short passage from the book The Veldt, was really interesting and I enjoyed reading it. It is mainly about a wealthy family that purchases a house that does almost everything for them. The family is not required to lift a finger, and as George's wife Lydia in the book puts it, "the house is wife and mother and now nursemaid."(10). The house also has a room called the veldt for George's kids Peter and Wendy in which they are able to imagine a place and make it come alive in this one little room. As the chapter goes on George starts to realize that his kids are spoiled and their lives begin to become a sort of fantasy  making them loose touch with reality. He calls is psychologist and he advises him to shut the veldt off. When george shuts it off, he tells his kids that the family will be taking a vacation to get back to daily life.  His kids begin to throw a tantrum. His wife advises him to turn it on for a few minutes for the last time. As he does this, the kids lock their parents in the room and the parents are eaten by a hungry tiger. It is really crazy what these kids did to their parents because they decided to take away the veldt from them. It just goes to show how addicting a piece of technology can be. This can related us kids today. We don't have something so extravagant like the veldt, but our generation cannot live without the various social networks and pieces of technology including Facebook, Twitter, and our iPods. The children in the book grew to love this virtual machine more than their own parents. I feel like something like this would exist in the future, but even though the idea sounds cool, I don't think that it would benefit anyone. Like this poor family, we would begin to loose our purpose in life, and everything that we need to work for would be just handed to us and whats the fun in that? Life is all about going through hardships to come out as a winner and achieve whatever it is that we want. Technology is going a little too far, and this passage is a great example of the repercussions.

Questions About George Orwell's 1984

1. What is the significance of the posters that read: BIG BROTHER IS WATCHING YOU? Who is Big Brother?
- The significance of the posters was to remind the people that they should not do anything against the rules and always be on their best behavior because they were being watched at all times. Big Brother is the leader of the party and he rules above all.

2. Where do we see evidence of panopticism in the novel?
- The posters of Big Brother are plastered everywhere with the words, "Big Brother is watching you." The citizens also know that there are things called telescreens, which are almost like video cameras in places that they cannot see. the police is always watching them and helicopters fly past everyone's apartment windows. They also had everyone paranoid with the idea that there was thought police in which all your thoughts were known by the party, so they could not think of anything that was against the party's rules.

3. What is the telescreen how is it used and what is its purpose?
- The telescreen was basically like a video-camera where the party was able to see and hear what you were doing in your own home.

4. What is the significance of the Party slogan: WAR IS PEACE, FREEDOM IS SLAVERY, IGNORANCE IS STRENGTH?
- These words are basically propaganda. They are meant to confuse the people so that they won't try and think anything else. By saying war is peace, they won't think that anything is wrong with fighting and will accept the concept of a war. Freedom is slavery is saying that if your thoughts are not tamed then you are basically slaving yourself. And ignorance is strength is a big one i would think for the party because its telling people to be ignorant so that they don't venture off into learning new things, and instead just live the way they are told.

5. Who are the Thought Police and what do they do?
- The thought police are basically the people who keep track of what everyone is thinking. They make sure that no one thinks thoughts that go against the party's beliefs and such. It is a way of scaring the people and remind them that the party always knows what they are doing.

6. What is the Two Minutes Hate and what is its purpose?
- The two minutes of hate is where the party shows its citizens their enemies and it shows the citizens what the party does to the ones who betray them. It is a way to brainwash the people, and again show how strong the party is. It is also a way for the citizens to channel their anger so that they will not have any anger towards the party.

7. What does Winston begin writing in the diary?
- Winston begins writing what he really thinks in his book. He feels like if he writes all his bad thoughts about the party down, he won't think them so that he would not get caught by the party. He also finds that it is a way he remembers the past, when he writes things begin to make sense a little more to him.

8. How would you feel if you lived in this world?
- I don't think I would never feel comfortable because I would know that ever move I make is being watched. In a world like that it is impossible to be yourself because you are pretty much told who you have to be. You don't have your own opinion about anything and you are blinded by what is really going on in the real world.

9. In what ways in our world like this world?
- We are also constantly being watched. There are video camera's in malls and stores to make sure that we are following all the laws and are on our best behavior. In schools we are watched by teacher and high authority. We are also pretty much watched by our parents that make sure that we are doing the right things to benefit our future. We are also watched every time that we are on the world wide web.

10. Do you think it's possible that our world could become like this one in the future? In what ways?
- I think it is possible that our world would become like this. I feel that even now it is becoming like this little by little but we just don't really notice the changes. There a things now that the government doesn't tell us, they choose which things they want us to know and which they want to keep in the dark.

Bonus: What is Orwell's purpose in writing this novel?
Bonus 2: What is Totalitarianism?

Panopticon

The Half Plan of the Panopticon where prisoners were always on their best behavior because they were constantly being watched

Artificial Intelligence Questions

1. Is it possible to create a human robot? In what ways?
- You can make a robot look like a human from the outside but the inside can never compare and cannot be mimicked.

2. What does it mean to be human? What sets us apart from machines?
- emotions such as fear, love, and anger. We also have the ability to reproduce as to where a robot has to be built. We humans also have the ability to grow up.

3. What can machines do better than humans and why?
- They are far more intelligent than humans. They are pretty much invincible, they have endless life.

4. Can a robot love?
- I don't think a robot can love. I think it can be taught to have a high amount of respect for someone, but they can't experience love like we can.

5. If a robot could love, could a human love it?
- I don't think we could love a robot, it would not be an unconditional love like a parent and their child.

Panopticon

The article Panopticon is mainly about us being "watched" at all times. it talks about how we are being surveillanced and all out information is being recorded at all times. On the web nothing ever gets erased, thats why we are told to be careful as to what we decide to post on the web. One bad step and it could cost you a new job that we are trying to apply for. Now a days we hear about job interviewers searching their applicants on the web even before they get to meet them in person, because they could basically get inside on them to see who they really are from what they post on their Facebooks or other social network. Because of silly mistakes, even celebrities have gotten in trouble with the web and have things on the internet that will never be forgotten. For example Kim Kardashian sex tape, or the inappropriate photos Miley Cyrus took of herself. It is very hard to keep things private these days on the internet because as this article reinforces everything is being recorded into a database.

"15 Life Changing Inventions Made by Mistake."

http://www.businessinsider.com/these-10-inventions-were-made-by-mistake-2010-11

Living in a world of perfect robots, there would be little to no errors/mistakes. Though I found this website that shares 15 life changing inventions made by mistake. Why would we want to live in a perfect world when many of our favorite things were invented by mistake!
The articles about virtual selves and artificial minds were very interesting. I found it crazy that there was thought about making an artificial "pain-maker" that can detect pain. I don't really understand how it would work, how can a machine learn how to detect pain? I don't think that artificial minds are a good idea. What we call "life" would not be life. Having a virtual life is not a real life, it would be more like a dream where you would always get your way. I don't see why anyone would want to live in a perfect world. That would be a little boring after a while. What would be the point? In this world we learn from our mistakes, and that is what make us better human beings. There would be no sense of accomplishment with anything because you don't have to work for anything.  Some of the greatest inventions were made by mistake. Take the chocolate cookie for example. Ruth Wakefield ran out of baker's chocolate one day while mixing cookie dough, so for a substitute she broke in little chocolate pieces. She thought it would melt but it turns out they stuck! How cool it that! I'm glad she ran out of baker's chocolate because I don't know what this world would be without a chocolate chip cookie! Anyways, back to artificial minds and such, I don't think that any kind of robot can compare to a human. We have our six senses in which a robot can never have. We are filled with emotions and feeling and flaws which is what makes us all different. Humans are the inventors of computer so I don't see why we would make then to run our lives or live lives. Computers are just meant to assist us and make life a little bit more convenient but for them to have a life of their own is a bit extreme.

"Human Perfection. What Could Go Wrong?"

Surrogates Questions

1. What are the advantages/disadvantages of a surrogate?
- Some advantages are that they are able to do things that humans cannot. They are more efficient and can perform tasks better. A human has more time for themselves. The disadvantages was as shown in the movie, you don't get to spend as much time with your spouse as you should. Everything is done by the robot leaving no "real" time with them.

2. Would you want to try a surrogate?
- I don't think I would want to try a surrogate. I think that we loose the true meaning of life. Everything would be so perfect in a world of surrogates and I think that in life we learn from our mistakes and we cherish memories making life interesting and with surrogates we would be limited to these things.

3. In the film, it says that 98 percent of the population uses surrogates. Why would society be so eager to be someone else--someone beautiful and perfect? What does this say about our society?
-  I think that even today we strive to be perfect, because that what society defines as "pretty" so all of us people kind of have that mind-set to be perfect and fit in. It just goes to show how messed up society is.

4. In the film the company VSI's  slogan is: Life...Only Better." If you experience something via surrogate--is it real? Is the experience better?
- I don't think that it is real because the surrogate is just a idea of something that you want to be. I don't think the experience is because it is just a model of what you want to be and your not really experiencing the real its just a virtual experience so you don't feel the same as if your were to experience for yourself as a human being.

The Loss of the Real

The article The Loss of the Real is mainly about how animations of things, take away from the real life characteristics and actions of things because animated characters are created to appeal to people. The article gives an example of the disney crocodile versus a real life crocodile. The disney crocodile has more dramatic features while real crocodiles don't really do half the things that are portrayed in the animation. One quote that I found interesting was one of Stephen L. Talbott's quotes, "years of exciting nature programming have comprised wildlife experience for children."(29) I really agree with this quote. I think that the animation of things really play games with your mind, and kids become disappointed to find out that the animation of things are not the same as the reality of things. I myself have been fooled by this. A lot of T.V shows portrayed high school as a horrible place where drama was endless and the jocks were the coolest. This scared me to death, and I did not want to go to high school, but come to find out high school was nothing like it is portrayed in television shows, which came as a relief.  Another quote that I found significant is, "We build our ideas about what is real and what is natural with the cultural materials available."(28) I feel like nowadays people seem to feel uncomfortable talking on the web or though text message, no one likes to meet in person. The two questions that I have for the author is, Have you ever been fooled by the animation of something versus the reality? Are you more comfortable talking in person or over the web?

No I-Pod For 24hrs.

In my English Class this week my professor asked us to go 24 hours without some kind of technology or social network that we use everyday. I choose my iPod because honestly I thought that it would be the easiest and that I could manage...well boy was I wrong! It had to have been one of thee hardest things I have ever done! On my way to school in the morning, I usually listen to music, and that morning all I had was my thoughts and I. I felt so bare and out of place while walking to school while everyone else around me had their little white plugs in their ears. I was surprised at how quiet it was. Everyone was just in their own little world and all I heard was the morning chirps of the birds, sprinklers in the area. I guess it was pretty nice to take in the nice morning view and environment around me because usually I have my face buried in my iPod deciding on what song to play next. It also seemed like a longer walk to school! I was a little frustrated and I had such a strong urge to just take my earphones out and stick them in my ears.  Overall, I don't think that I could go without my iPod again. It is just too boring of a walk to not to listen to music! I love it too much to give it up or even keep it at a minimum. I don't know what I would do without music! It plays such a big part in my life!

Article Response: Society Is Dead, We Have Retreated into the iWorld

The article Society Is Dead, We Have Retreated Into the iWorld by Andrew Sullivan talks about our society and how it is becoming dead. We are being taken over by the one and only iPod. It says that we people are now in our own world missing out on what the world and nature has to offer. This article was very interesting and put much into perspective for me. It is true how shone the world out, and we all are in our own little close-minded worlds. "Each was in his or her own musical world, walking to their soundtrack, stars in their own music vide, almost oblivious to the world around them."I found this quote very interesting, mainly because it is the bare truth! As I walk to class everyday to I see about 95% of people with their iPods tucked in their ears and that includes myself. I have seen people almost get ran over because they could not hear the sound of the approaching bike behind them. I also loved the ending sentence of the article, "Try it. There's a world out there. And it has a soundtrack all its own." I think that this quote summed up the whole article and was a great ending sentence, and is something that we should try doing more often. The two questions I would like to ask the author is, does he listen to his iPod less often now? and have you undated to the latest iPod out today do you feel like this is going to be a much worst problem in the future?
